by Charlie. And I'm also listening to Kate Nash's 'Mouthwash' which is just inspiring on it's own.
But this post's title should be "Let's Talk About The First Day Of School" because it is a topic that has a thousand opinions tied up in it.
Okay, so I am one of the people who LOVES the first day of school. I don't really hang out with my school friends during the summer, so I get to see all of them again, which is awesome. Except that they've all gone off to somewhere fabulous and lost a trillion pounds and gotten their hair done and gone through at least two boyfriends. The conversation usually goes like this:
Me: Hey ____! God, you look amazing!
Friend: Haha, thanks Jess, you look just like you always do, you never seem to change.
Me: Oh, uh. Yeah. What did you do over break?
Friend: Oh, jeez, what didn't I do? I was in Hawaii for like, three weeks, that was amazing, I met this guy and then I went to Europe, got back three days ago and.... Well, what did you do?
Me: I uh.... Beat three bosses in Zelda in one week. And then I attempted to work on one of my novels, the sci-fi one, but didn't get very far. I went to Montana and got to work on a ranch for a while, that was cool.
Friend: Um, yeah, sure. Oh, I see ________, catch up with you later.
And then I go hang out with the awesome band geeks who love me.
I'm not the biggest shopper, so back to school clothes shopping is never on the top of my list. But every year I attempt to reinvent myself, and always end up falling back to the good old jeans and a t shirt look. Some people come back looking like they hired a stylist and wardrobe crew. And I just look like my mom dragged me to the mall.
But I also like getting my schedule, and checking to see who's in my classes. I love it when there's only like, one obscure friend in a class. It gives me a chance to branch out.
I also see where people who hate the first day are coming from. Everyone judges you, and it doesn't matter if you're the prom queen of the lowest band geek, every one's going to be eying you, making sure you didn't make a drastic change over the summer and get beautiful, or go the opposite way. Girls scope out the guys from last year, see if they grew out of the block head stage they were in last year, and guy, well. I don't know what guys do. I'm not one.
And all the while, you're trying to decide what you want to be this year. Do you want to branch out so far you're in a totally new group? Do you want to hang back with all your old friends? Are you going to go out for that club, or try out for that play? Are you going to sit in the front, or the back? Be teacher's pet or class clown? And the tricky thing is, everyone else is also trying to figure out what they want to be, and at the same time, they are trying to figure out what everyone else wants to be.
And really, all you have is the first week before you're stuck as whatever they label you. Sure, you can be all "I don't have a label, I'm just me." But chances are, they'll make a label for you, like "That kid who doesn't have a label."
And of course, on top of all of that, you have to deal with actual school work. Because we ARE talking about school here. So you have to deal with teachers who may or may not hate you for no reason.
But that's a different topic. Teachers are a different breed of people.

I'm glad I'm somehow able to inspire SOMEONE around here.
Anyways.
I don't think I'm one of those people who hates the first day of school. I mean, it's exciting starting over, getting out of the summer days in which you sit around watching TV & getting fat, & it's nice to hang out with friends & have something to talk about with strangers. 'Hey what classes are you taking this year?' or whatever.
& I love how it feels after it's been a week or so & you FINALLY know your locker combination by heart, know which hallway to go down so you 'accidentally' run into the cute guy in who knows what year, & you start to feel like you've been in school for a while when it's only been a week.
I hate the judging, though, that can go. I hate how everyone seems to change & you're the one person who has either stayed the same or gotten fatter or something. No tan, no highlights, no new fringe, no new found style. Just the same old you. Well not YOU but.. You know.
When do you start school? I start up again on the 25th, so this weekend kind of needs to be excellent. I hate school.
I was reading your comments about your bad church experience on Chuck's blog. I can understand where you are coming from, and having been in churches my entire life I've seen lots of stupid stuff go down. What you need to remember is that church people are still just that, people, and are prone to making dumb moves like that. I've been angry lots of times with some idiotic actions, but I've come to realize that I've probably done my share of them as well.
The gist of what I wanted to say is to give church another chance, or, rather more importantly, give Jesus a chance. I can promise that is something you will never regret.
Although it was countless years ago, I still do remember what the first day of school was like. I always had a mix of emotions. Partly I wanted to see people I hadn't seen, but at the same time I was nervous doing so.
Enjoy these times, and take your time growing up.
*end sounding like your parents*
1. Just to clarify, I don't volunteer at my church, I volunteer at the library that is about two seconds away from my house. I dunno if you thought I volunteered at my church or not, but if you did I'm telling you now.
2. I'm sorry you got laid off by church people. I guess they left a lasting impression on you, but not one you would have wanted. I wish you would try it again, but I'm not gonna like 'YOU SHOULD READ THE BIBLE!' 'GO TO CHURCH!' shove religion down your throat or anything. I just wish you would go to another church & try again.
3. I'm sorry, what? What D/J Blog thing? I'm glad you've been e-mailing him c: & that you guys don't have one of those awkward relationships that comes from one person coming onto another when that person has a girlfriend.
Nothing I type comes out in the tone I want it to! Please don't take offense to anything I've typed so far. Meh.
4. Your school is weird, making every year start on a different day? Or maybe I'm just not understanding. I start on Monday, as does the rest of my county. & I didn't know you were a sophomore, I guess your age & my age weren't really important subjects this whole time. You're turning 16 soon. OR HAVE YOU ALREADY! No I don't think you have. Great person I am.
I'm going to bed now before I say something stupid.
Too late, I'm sure.
